Are expensive batteries worth the extra money?

Premium batteries cost more, but they aren’t always better. It depends on what you power.

1. Shelf life is the main difference

Premium alkaline and lithium batteries often promise a longer shelf life, which matters for stock you keep for years. In everyday use, the gap is smaller.

2. Heavy-use devices gain most

Cameras, game controllers, flashes and toys that draw a lot of power can benefit from a premium cell, which often lasts noticeably longer under load.

3. Low-drain devices don’t need it

Clocks, remotes and wall sensors use very little power. A budget alkaline usually lasts about as long as a premium one in these, so spend less.

4. Look for independent tests

Brand claims vary. Compare independent tests for the kind of device you use, and buy the same battery type for every cell in a device that needs several.
